Press Release:

POLESTAR CYAN RACING ANNOUNCES MULTI-YEAR FIA WTCC PROGRAMME Polestar Cyan Racing will enter the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2016 with two Volvo S60 Polestar race cars as start of a multi-year programme. ”We have chosen the FIA WTCC as our global motorsport platform as it combines the cutting edge technology of our Volvo cars with exciting racing all over the world. The championship enables us to further develop our technology and utilise development from the racing circuits directly to our products for performance oriented Volvo customers,” said Niels Möller, COO of Polestar, the Volvo Cars Performance Brand. The announcement comes on the day 30 years after Volvo Cars claimed the 1985 European Touring Car Championship title with the iconic Volvo 240 Turbo. Fast-forward to 2016 and Polestar Cyan Racing will carry the legacy to a new challenge, by taking on the world title with the brand new Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 race car. ”This is a great day for all of us at Polestar Cyan Racing to announce our assault on the FIA World Touring Car Championship, a programme that boils down to one thing; to bring the world title to Sweden,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar. Cyan Racing is the official motorsport partner to Polestar, the Volvo Cars Performance Brand, a cooperation started in 1996 with six STCC driver titles and seven team titles under its belt, most recently securing a double 2015 STCC title for the third year in succession. Following an evaluation season in the 2011 WTCC and two seasons in the Australian V8 Supercars, 2016 marks the start of the Polestar Cyan Racing's first multi-year programme in a world championship. ”We have got respect for the task ahead of us that we take on with absolute commitment. This is a long-term effort and we have got an extensive testing programme during the winter that will continue alongside our first WTCC season in 2016 that is all about learning,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Cyan Racing. Polestar Cyan Racing announces multi-year FIA WTCC programme The 240 Turbo dominated the racing circuits in Australia, Finland, Germany, Portugal, New Zealand and Sweden during the mid-eighties. Volvo had proved the strength of their concept with a downsized four-cylinder turbo charged engine against the might of the likes of BMW, Rover and Jaguar, all using six, eight and 12-cylinder engines. The all-new Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 race car carries the legacy of the 240 Turbo, featuring a newly developed 4-cylinder turbo engine of 400 horsepower, based on the cutting edge technology of the new Drive-E Volvo engine family. ”To use the Volvo engine as base and not go for the available generic WTCC race engine for our car was a no-brainer. Volvo engines are suitable for racing purposes in terms of power, technology and durability, as we have proven previously in the STCC, V8 Supercars and WTCC. The Drive-E engine is a perfect example with its low friction technology and exotic materials. We have been able to utilise a lot of development work from earlier racing programmes as well as road car development and we are keen to get going against the best in the 2016 WTCC,” said Mattias Evensson, head of engine development at Cyan Racing. Reigning STCC champion Thed Björk, three-time STCC champion Fredrik Ekblom and multiple STCC race winner Robert Dahlgren are part of the development work of the WTCC programme. Further information on the 2016 WTCC Polestar Cyan Racing programme, including driver line-up, will be revealed in due course.

Press Release:

VOLVO CARS WILL BRING 265 POLESTAR VEHICLES and NEW COLORS FOR US IN 2016 (ROCKLEIGH, NJ - JULY 16, 2015) Volvo Cars of North America will be importing only 265 S60 and V60 Polestar vehicles for model year 2016. Cars will start to arrive on U.S. shores this summer, with 60% of the allocation expected to be V60s and 40% to be S60s. Polestar engineers made over 70 modifications and upgrades to the original S60 and V60, resulting in an impressive performance vehicle that gives the driver optimal control in all roads and conditions. The Polestar production range has been popular among performance enthusiasts, with the 2015 model year selling out quickly. Previously only available in Rebel Blue and Black Sapphire, model year 2016 will now add Ice White and Bright Silver to the color options. The appeal of a classic Volvo look with enhanced driving dynamics has made the Polestar editions truly unique on American roads. Each vehicle will feature a 345 horsepower, 6 cylinder engine sprinting from 0-60 MPH in just 4.7 seconds (4.8 seconds for the V60) thanks to a new twin-scroll turbo, intercooler, full flow active exhaust and completely recalibrated engine management system. The transmission was modified to give the driver more control with faster gear shifts partnered with a Haldex all-wheel drive system. This power is coupled with a chassis that provides impressive road feedback and control. Custom shock absorbers were developed with long-time partner Öhlins producing a suspension usually reserved for supercars. Stopping power was optimized through a completely upgraded brake system, including 6-piston Brembo brake calipers and ventilated brake discs. To achieve the perfect balance of performance and control in almost any scenario, each S60 and V60 Polestar vehicle features recalibrated exterior aerodynamics and bespoke Polestar rims with an airy, unique design that supports airflow around the brakes to increase breaking endurance. Custom features continue into the cabin with a Nubuck clad steering wheel and seats to increase grip. “This is a performance vehicle that combines Polestar's racing experience with Volvo Cars' exceptional ability to build everyday cars” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “it is a rare combination that is hard for others to duplicate successfully.” Each vehicle boasts a long list of standard equipment, such as Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Adaptive Cruise Control, Harman Kardon Premium Sound and several features typically optional on competitor models. Volvo Cars' partnership with Polestar was further enhanced earlier this week when the Swedish automaker announced the 100% purchase of Polestar Performance AB. Further development of Polestar enhanced vehicles are anticipated as the company transitions all vehicles to the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) by the end of 2018.

Press Release:

Volvo takes Cross Country brand into sedan territory Volvo Cars points to the future with the new S60 Cross Country A segment first from Volvo Cars Builds on a strong heritage of lifestyle-oriented products Volvo Cars is stepping up to meet the demands of its core customers with the unveiling of the exciting S60 Cross Country at the Detroit Auto Show. Back in 1997, when Volvo was the first premium brand to introduce an all-road capable variant of its successful wagons, no one could predict the future success of the crossover concept. Today, the crossover is ubiquitous and has helped to define a whole new category of lifestyle vehicle. Volvo is once again taking a bold step forward - this time in the luxury sedan segment - with the unveiling of the S60 Cross Country - the first premium sedan with the same level of capability and rugged design cues of the renowned Cross Country wagons. “We want to further explore the market with our Cross Country brand. We did this back in 1997 with the V70 Cross Country and it led to the birth of a whole new segment. We have included all the capability-driven benefits of the Cross Country brand in this new model, while offering a completely unique expression of adventure and all-road readiness in a distinctly sporty and stylish package,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars. Capable stance Like the recently introduced V60 Cross Country, the S60 Cross Country shares an increased ride height of 65mm (2.5 inches) and comes with the same capable All-Wheel Drive underpinnings of its sibling, making it the only truly capable and stylish all-road sedan crossover on the market. The S60 Cross Country will also be delivered with front-wheel drive in Europe and selected markets. “The S60 Cross Country is the sole contender in the luxury crossover sedan segment. We have identified a clear niche in the market for a more capable sedan with rugged styling cues and a higher stance. The S60 Cross Country will appeal to people that are searching for an exciting and capable sedan, whilst enjoying the clear benefits that a crossover offers,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. Reflecting Volvo's legendary capability of nature and Scandinavian heritage, the S60 Cross Country offers both 18” and 19” wheels with high profile tires that add both comfort and all-road aesthetics, reduce road noise, and add increased wheel protection when needed for city or country. Delivering an involved and focused driving experience with rugged substance, this dynamic design brings a sporty and adventurous edge to the sedan. Powertrain The S60 Cross Country will launch with a powerful T5 All-Wheel Drive gasoline powertrain delivering up to 250 bhp* available in the US, Canada, Russia and Europe. The S60 Cross Country is expected to be available on a limited basis this summer. US 250 bhp EU 254 hp Russia 249 hp (for taxation reasons)

Press Release:

Volvo Cars has unveiled a new concept at the Shanghai Auto Show that takes executive in-car luxury to a new level. Labelled the Lounge Console, the concept offers busy chauffeur-driven business people the ultimate executive accessory - a compact and versatile solution to expanded storage and comfort. The Lounge Console replaces the front passenger seat, providing a wealth of functions and amenities.“We started this work by looking at the executive lifestyle. With our progressive approach to premium design and functionality we analyzed the needs and perspective of the chauffeur driven executive, designing the car around him or her in the spirit of our brand's aim,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group. “A key element in our thinking was how to make the available interior space work for the occupants in an optimal and luxurious fashion. Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities.”Having performed ethnographic research to establish the unexpressed and unmet needs of people with a high-profile lifestyle, the designers at Volvo Cars looked at how such needs might be met in one combined offer.“The intention with this concept is to showcase two things - firstly that Volvo Cars is aware of the needs of our executive customers and secondly, that with design innovation and modern materials we can effectively create passenger experience that is unique in the premium car segment.” added Thomas Ingenlath. The Lounge Console incorporates features designed to enhance the in-car experience. Volvo Cars' designers provide a large work table which opens to reveal an illuminated vanity mirror, including a storage tray for jewelry and personal accessories or make-up. The table rotates 90 degrees and simultaneously powers forward to display a large 17” media screen for a full in-car theater experience. Below the cushioned leg rest is an additional area for shoes. For added security Volvo Cars has included a lockable storage box. The removal of the front passenger seat allows for full forward vision creating a uniquely spacious environment.“People who are on the move and have a hectic lifestyle going from event to event or meeting to meeting need some space, some luxury time, and the opportunity to relax and refresh themselves for the next engagement. This is ultimately what the Lounge Console is designed to facilitate,” concluded Thomas Ingenlath.

Press Release:

Volvo Cars will unveil the most luxurious vehicle ever built by the Swedish company in its 88 year history at the Shanghai International Automobile Show - an elegant and refined four-seat version of its recently launched XC90. The XC90 Excellence has been crafted by Volvo's designers and engineers to offer customers a distinct and individual automotive experience that incorporates the latest Scandinavian innovations in design, refinement, comfort and style. The XC90 Excellence is based on Volvo's all new XC90 sports utility vehicle, but the similarity ends there. The XC90 Excellence has just four seats compared to the original's seven, creating an enormous amount of additional space for rear seat passengers that helps to deliver an exceptional customer experience. This space is utilised to offer a First Class automotive experience that begins with broad, spacious individual reclining rear seats complete with massage, ventilation and increased leg room, as well as a retractable control touchscreen, folding tables, a refrigerator with bottle and glass holders, a heating/cooling cup holder and handmade crystal glasses from leading Swedish glass design company, Orrefors. “This is our new flagship car,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design. “We have created the ultimate luxury experience of Scandinavian design. Volvo has never launched a car like this before. This is the car that demonstrates what the name Volvo now means.” The XC90 Excellence offers its passengers footrests, ambient lighting, illuminated storage and unique leather detailing in blond or charcoal, a luggage compartment dividing screen, additional sound insulation in the cabin and Pirelli Noise Cancelling System tyres (PNCS). XC90 Excellence passengers will also enjoy a specially-augmented Bowers and Wilkins audio system that adds an extra speaker to its 19 speaker system, resulting in unrivalled high fidelity sound reproduction and surround effect in the rear seats. “What we have designed is amongst the best rear seat experiences available in a luxury car,” said Mr Ingenlath. “The result is a superlative environment for relaxed comfort or doing business.” Reinforcing the Swedish love of fresh air, the XC90 Excellence also comes with an integrated ionic air cleaner in the CleanZone climate system. The ionic air cleaner works by positively charging electrons in airborne particles (dust or smoke for example) so they are removed from suspension in the cabin environment. The XC90 Excellence also offers a leather instrument panel with contrasting thread, while the headliner of the cabin is colour coordinated pure Nubuck textile. Exterior styling differentiators including an Excellence rank mark, chrome B- and C-pillar cappings and lower door mouldings. Volvo's all new XC90, launched in August 2014, is proving to be extremely popular with customers seeking a luxury SUV. Over 24,000 have been ordered before it has even reached Volvo showrooms. This accounts for approximately half of Volvo's expected volume for the car in 2015. The XC90 Excellence incorporates all the features that underpin the XC90's ongoing success, such as world leading safety features, new powertrain technologies and an unrivalled combination of power and fuel efficiency. The XC90 Excellence will be available globally later this year and via digital commerce in selected markets.

This translates to a maximum driveline power output of approximately 230 hp when the electric motor and diesel engine are working simultaneously. “We decided to offer a special edition of the V60 D5 Twin Engine to celebrate the growing success and continued roll-out of our Twin Engine product range. We are one of few car makers that deliver a true no compromise driving experience - combining the benefits of pure electric drive, high performance and great fuel economy,” added Dr. Thomas Müller. The Special Edition is delivered with Crystal White exterior paint, 19-inch wheels and glossy black exterior detailing. Inside, the car is equipped with a black headliner and piano black trim. The V60 D5 Special Edition will also feature the unique Blond sport seat upholstery with decorative white stitching as seen in our Volvo Ocean Race editions. Just 500 examples of the special edition model will be built, while a regular V60 D5 Twin Engine will be more widely available later this spring.

20 years of performance Volvo estates - The 855 T5-R and V60 Polestar

The Volvo 855 T5-R made its debut 20 years ago as the first dedicated performance estate model from Volvo. Polestar celebrated the anniversary by bringing the 855 T5-R together with its current heir, the Volvo V60 Polestar, to Huntington Beach, California, USA. ”Fast Volvo estates as the 855 T5-R is something special for many performance car enthusiasts around the world and we are proud to continue that heritage to a new level with the V60 Polestar,” said Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar. The Volvo 855 T5-R was introduced in 1994 and featured a five-cylinder turbo-charged engine of 240 hp and 330 Nm, combined with a further developed chassis. The result was one of the fastest estate cars of its time and an iconic performance car. ”I still remember the overwhelming reception we got when we showed the T5-R for the first time, especially combined with the current BTCC program we had with the 850 estate. I am very glad to see Polestar together with Volvo continuing this unique heritage today in the form of the V60 Polestar,” said Thomas Lindskog, Vice President 800 series at Volvo Cars in 1994. Press Release:

All-road, all-weather capability and rugged design V60 sporty driving feel with added ‘go-anywhere' capability Extends Volvo's acclaimed Cross Country product line-up Important product for North American growth plan Volvo Cars unveils the long-awaited Cross Country version of its successful V60 sportswagon at the 2014 LA Motor Show this month. “We are delighted to add the third true Cross Country model to our product portfolio. The successful combination of dynamic styling and rugged capability places the V60 Cross Country in a class of its own,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars. Heritage The Cross Country brand has a long and distinguished heritage. Volvo Cars was the first premium brand to offer increased all-road capability and styling on its wagons as far back as 1997 when it introduced the V70 Cross Country, creating a whole new type of car experience that has since captured the imagination of the motoring public. Reflecting Volvo's Scandinavian heritage and love of nature and adventure, the V60 Cross Country brings together the best of both worlds - a sporty, connected yet comfortable driving experience with the freedom to explore new horizons. Sporty capability “With ground clearance increased 65mm compared to the V60, the Cross Country's sturdy construction offers unparalleled control on and off the beaten track, coupled with an enhanced sporty driving experience thanks to torque vectoring technology and corner traction control. The V60 Cross Country really is a getaway car - enabling an adventurous lifestyle in pure rugged form,” said Lex Kerssemakers. Offering new Cross Country 18” and 19” wheels, the V60 Cross Country comes with high profile tyres, adding comfort and off-road aesthetics, reducing road noise and providing added wheel protection whether climbing kerbs or negotiating rocky roads. Rugged individualist design Central to the Cross Country concept is the expression of go-anywhere capability and rugged design. It caters to those who have an active lifestyle, favouring the dirt road over the paved, handling either with ease. This is manifested in the V60 Cross Country through explicit design cues that heighten the adventurous nature of the car. With increased ground clearance, skid plates front and rear, side scuff plates and fender extenders, the V60 Cross Country conveys an imposing, muscular presence that underlies its capable nature, while integrated tailpipes reflect its sporty dark side. To complement the capable exterior styling, sports seats in black leather with distinctive brown stitching will be available from launch, while two new two-tone leather upholsteries will be offered to coincide with the EU and Rest of World Launch in early 2015. Powertrains The US and Canada will get the first V60 Cross Country cars, and they will launch with Volvo's iconic five cylinder 250 hp petrol engine with All-Wheel Drive coupled to an automatic transmission delivering a highly competitive 23 mpg. Drive-E power Volvo's new class-leading Drive-E four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, which will be available in the V60 Cross Country globally in early 2015, will be the base for the Front-Wheel Drive variant, while the proven five-cylinder D4 powertrain will provide the power for the All-Wheel Drive variant.

Volvo Cars reveals 450hp High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept

Triple Boost Technology takes Volvo's four-cylinder Drive-E Powertrain petrol engine to 450hp

Further proof of Volvo's commitment to delivering driving pleasure through down-sizing

Volvo delivers a unique combination of performance and efficiency with the High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept - a triple boost 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with no less than 450hp.

Following the successful introduction of Volvo's Drive-E Powertrain range in 2013, Volvo's powertrain team once again demonstrates its technological leadership in emission-reducing turbo technology.

'When we launched the Drive-E powertrain family, our aim was to deliver the most advanced 4-cylinder engines in the industry based on emissions and fuel consumption relative to performance and drivability,' says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo Car Group.

'We knew that 320hp in our petrol configuration was just a starting point. The 450hp High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept, demonstrates this ambition and the versatility of the Drive-E Powertrains.'

The 450hp High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept is based on a set of technologies not usually found in a four-cylinder engine.

The engine utilises two parallel turbochargers, which are fed by an electrically powered turbo-compressor. The compressed air from this unit, rather than being fed to the cylinders, is instead used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers. Fuel is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure. With this kind of power density, this triple boost installation and unique fuel system, enables a very dynamic drivability without any turbo lag, compared to a mono-turbo.

'There are several high power small size applications where one large turbo is used to create a high level of power available from other manufacturers, but the driving experience suffers due to slow engine response. We felt that with our heritage of being among the first car companies to embrace and offer a broad range of turbo technology since 1981, that we could improve this,' says Michael Fleiss, Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group.

The High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept attracted the attention and involvement of Volvo Cars suppliers AVL, Denso and Volvo Polestar Racing at an early stage, which allowed theories and technologies from racing applications to be infused in the development process.

'This was a very exciting project as we pioneered a combination of technologies in the same application, and the result is a quite unique engine with its high power yet quick response. Above all, its compact size improves weight distribution between the front and rear axle and lowers the center of gravity - two factors that have a significant effect on the handling, whether it is a race car or a street car,' said Mattias Evensson, Race Engine Director at Volvo Polestar Racing.

'It may sound odd, but this 450hp engine is part of this work. Down-sizing must offer customers attractive and usable power for broad scale emissions reduction to work. Compact powertrains free up space and weight in the structure of the car, which can be used for electrification and even further emissions reduction. And that is our ultimate ambition,' concludes Dr. Mertens.

Press Release:

Volvo Cars has released the first images of the R-Design version of the all new XC90, aimed at buyers looking for a head-turner that radiates a truly sporty and dynamic look.

“R-Design is created for people with a passion for things that add spice to life,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service of Volvo Car Group. “It appeals to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design. Every single R-Design detail is designed to contribute to the individualistic and refined expression these customers desire.”

The visual promise of a dynamic ride is confirmed by the driver-centric interior featuring R-Design Contour sports seats in Nubuck and perforated leather. A choice of Drive-E powertrains offering up to 400 hp and the completely new XC90 chassis ensure an agile driving experience.

The release of the R-Design follows Volvo's release of 1,927 individually numbered black First Edition XC90's which were offered for sale exclusively online and sold out in 47 hours.

Distinctive R-Design detailing

The R-Design exterior includes a number of distinguishing details, such as grille, front spoiler, silk metal window surround, integrated dual exhausts, integrated silver roof rails and silver matt mirror covers. 20-inch R-Design alloy wheels complete the stylish, dynamic look.

Inside, gearshift paddles, plus the Contour sports seats and perforated leather steering wheel and gearshift knob are accompanied by special R-Design details, such as sports seats, pedals, floor mats and illuminated tread plates. The driver also gets an exclusive R-Design leather key remote control.

Tablet-like touch screen

The tablet-like touch screen in the centre and a 12.3-inch fully graphical driver display are of course included in the R-Design. The driver display also features a unique R-Design theme. The heart of the all-new in-car control is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to operate their car and access a range of Internet and cloud based products and services.

New trim level strategy

The core of the new XC90 range will be the Momentum model. Above this sits two separate branches - for a sports-inspired look and feel, the R-Design offers exclusive features and design detailing. Meanwhile, for an elegant look and an even more luxurious experience, customers can opt for the richly equipped Inscription model.

“In principle, we have replaced the previous top level with the Inscription and R-Design versions. Both of them feature an elevated content, carefully chosen to emphasise each of their distinctive individual personalities,” said Alain Visser.

Concept Estate is third design study by Thomas Ingenlath

Concept Estate echoes design heritage of Volvo 1800 ES

Interior reveals how forthcoming models will look and function

Volvo Car Group will use the Geneva Motorshow to reveal the third in a series of concept cars – the Concept Estate – that continues the widely-admired exterior design language revealed in the first two concepts, but for the first time reveals how the interior of Volvo’s forthcoming models will both look and function.

The Volvo Concept Estate’s most striking interior design feature is its simplicity. The traditional selection of buttons and controls have been replaced by one large tablet-like touch screen control panel in the centre console, bringing the interior firmly into the 21st century.

“The basic idea is to organise controls and information in a perfectly intuitive and user-friendly way. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient and safe,†says Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

In association with Volvo’s specially designed software, the touch screen will be the main control panel for Volvo’s new in-car user experience. It replaces all buttons and controls except for a few crucial functions such as volume, play/pause, hazard warning and window heaters. It also interacts seamlessly with the digital instrument cluster in front of the driver.

“Not having to deal with buttons and controls for a growing number of functionalities is like being freed from a pair of handcuffs,†says Robin Page, Design Director Interior of Volvo Car Group. “This has made it possible to build a beautiful interior architecture around the portrait screen. The concept car showcases how this user interface will be integrated in our new car generation.â€

Volvo is the company that redefined the Estate car by combining functionality, sturdiness and practicality with performance. The V70 and XC70 are among the most respected Estates on the market and the new Concept Estate points to how the company could capitalise on this heritage in its forthcoming models.

Volvo has been on a winning streak with its concept cars. The Concept Coupé was named ‘Car of the Show’ by a leading German auto magazine at the Frankfurt Motorshow, while the Concept XC Coupé received the prestigious ‘Eyes ON Design’ award at the Detroit Motorshow.

Global attention on Volvo’s concept cars has been intensifying as they provide the first significant clues as to how the all-new and much-anticipated XC90 SUV and subsequent cars will look. The XC90 is due to be launched later this year.

Learning from history

The rear of Concept Estate echoes the design of the Volvo 1800 ES from the early 1970s.

“The 1800-models are iconic Volvos, renowned for their beautiful forms and detailing. However, using elements from their exterior and interior has nothing to do with being retro. We are using these subtle links to a glorious past to create a future in which sheer beauty becomes a recognised part of Volvo’s identity,†says Thomas Ingenlath.

The subtle inspiration from the 1800-models is also evident on several details inside the Concept Estate, such as the two-spoke steering wheel, the instrument panel and the dials.

Robin Page explains: “The first four decades of the Volvo history was characterised by classic craftsmanship and high quality materials. We are merging this vital part of our brand DNA with the more recent focus on technology and smart functionality. In the Concept Estate we also add the creative side of Scandinavia. The result is an exotic interior with genuine materials and beautiful detailing.â€

Beautiful and different

Applying this approach to the iconic estate car – which is the essence of versatile Volvo functionality – creates a car that is both beautiful and different.

The generous dash to axle ratio, low bonnet, sleek silhouette and the glass roof all contribute to the impression of a dynamic, yet capable three-door sports wagon. The contrast between the deep, dark brown pear colour and the bright five-spoke, 21-inch wheels contributes to the modern, cool aura.

Just like the recent Concept Coupé and the Concept XC Coupé, the face of the Volvo Concept Estate is characterised by a new topography on the bonnet and the ‘floating’ grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped DRL light guides. The rear light signature is another distinctive element in Volvo Cars’ new design direction.

Swedish inside and out

Extrovert and colourful trends within contemporary Swedish lifestyle and design have been powerful sources of inspiration for the design team. Occupants in all four seats are embraced by orange seat belts, and the exclusive, woven wool carpets from the Swedish designer Kasthall have the same deep accent colour.

The crystal gear leaver from Orrefors/Kosta Boda also has an orange glow, while the chequered black and white wool textile on the headliner and rear sides of the front seats adds playfulness to the ‘room’.

“Creativity is thriving in Swedish society. This includes design and technology as well as the fashion, music and art scene. We have used all this as inspiration to create a new, exciting way to express Sweden’s soul,†says Thomas Ingenlath.

The feel of a Scandinavian living room

Refined, handcrafted details, such as an instrument panel covered by thick, naturally tanned saddle leather from Tärnsjö, inlays made of waxed, naturally aged wood and machined copper details, also emphasise the exclusive Swedish atmosphere inside Concept Estate.

“The interior is exceptionally vivid. Yet the glass roof and seats covered by light, soft Bridge of Wear leather help to retain that bright and cosy feeling that is the hallmark of a Swedish living room. A place that makes you feel so comfortable that you are reluctant to leave,†says Robin Page.

Specially designed Swedish ‘kubb’ game

The ambiance might inspire occupants to stop for a picnic and game of Swedish “kubbâ€. The specially designed game set is visible through the load floor in the back.

“Don’t know the rules? No problem. They are printed on the transparent floor. And rain is no excuse. You will find exclusive Stutterheim raincoats in the back of the car as well,†explains Robin Page.

THE VOLVO CONCEPT COUPÉ – THE NEXT GENERATION P1800: ELEGANT CONFIDENCE ENABLED BY THE NEW SCALABLE ARCHITECTURE

Inspired by contemporary, progressive Scandinavian lifestyle and design, as well as iconic elements from the past, the elegant new Volvo Concept Coupé is the first of a series of three concept cars that reveal the design possibilities created by the company's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

After more than a year of rising expectations, the first design by the new Senior Vice President of Design, Thomas Ingenlath, showcases how design builds emotion into the Volvo brand and points towards the next generation of Volvo models, starting with the forthcoming XC90 in 2014.

"The Volvo Concept Coupé is no futuristic dream car. It is designed to demonstrate the capability of our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures. Even though the all-new XC90 is an entirely different type of car, you will recognise the connection instantly when it is revealed next year," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Developed in-house for Volvo Cars only, the Scalable Product Architecture liberates Volvo's designers and engineers from the limitations of previous cross-brand platforms.

"The new Volvo Concept Coupé reveals how we could shape our cars from now on. Free from the superficial surface excitement of other car brands, we add emotional value to the Volvo brand with the calm, confident beauty that is the hallmark of Scandinavian design," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Powerful visual impact

The visual impact of the new proportions is most powerful when viewing the Volvo Concept Coupé from the side. The distance between the dashboard and the front axle is extended and the greenhouse has been moved slightly rearwards.

A low bonnet, roof, and the five-spoke, 21-inch wheels also contribute to the impression of an elegant Gran Tourer oozing effortless power. The confident stance is emphasised by a beltline that spans an elegant bow along the whole car.

"Think about the powerful calmness of a lion. He doesn't have to prowl to radiate respect. Even lying down he shows very clearly what he is capable of," smiles Thomas Ingenlath.

New T-shaped DRL lights

The face of the Volvo Concept Coupé is characterised by a new topography on the bonnet and the 'floating' grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped DRL light guides. Just like the rear light signature, the DRL lights are distinctive elements in the new design direction of Volvo Cars.

"The face is new, but it also carries more than 85 years of Volvo heritage with great pride. We are still working with the final interpretation of the grille and the iron mark and this will be revealed together with the XC90 next year," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Echoes the iconic P1800

The Concept Coupé also features elements that echo the design of the Volvo P1800 from the 1960s.

"It is a car designer's duty to reflect and incorporate design signatures that are vital parts of the company's heritage. The P1800 is an iconic Volvo, renowned for its beautiful forms and detailing. However, using elements from the P1800 exterior and interior has nothing to do with being retro. We are using these subtle links to a glorious past to create a future where sheer beauty becomes a recognised part of Volvo's identity. That journey starts with Concept Coupé," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Sparkling crystal gear-lever

The blue-grey exterior is echoed on the inside of the Volvo Concept Coupé. Refined, handcrafted elements such as the leather instrument panel, inlays made of naturally aged wood and the dark blue woven carpets are blended with beautifully machined metal details."

"To me, handcrafted crystal is one of the finest examples of high-quality Scandinavian design and I love the idea of bringing it into the car. The prominent position of the gear-lever is the perfect place for this sparkling sensation," says Robin Page, Design Director Interior at Volvo Car Group. He adds: "The experience inside Concept Coupé is an excellent example of how we will make Volvo customers feel truly special."

Large portrait touch-screen

The concept car also includes a totally new approach to Volvo Cars' human-centric user experience. A large portrait touch-screen in the centre console interacts with an adaptive digital display and head-up display in front of the driver.

"This is a natural integration of user interfaces in our new car generation. Interaction with pleasure but without distraction is the key. We bring connectivity into our cars to make them both more enjoyable and safe," explains Thomas Ingenlath.

The Scalable Product Architecture is also being prepared for completely autonomous driving. The first features with autonomous steering to avoid accidents and make driving more comfortable will be introduced in 2014 – and Volvo Cars' aim is to have cars with fully autonomous technology out on the roads before 2020.

Petrol plug-in hybrid – powerful and efficient

The petrol plug-in hybrid driveline in the Volvo Concept Coupé reflects Volvo Cars' strategy to use electrification to create the most powerful versions in the new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family. This will take power figures up into V8 territory.

The concept car features a two-litre high-performance Drive-E petrol engine with a supercharger and turbo. The petrol engine is teamed with an electric motor on the rear axle. This gives Volvo Concept Coupé a total output of around 400 hp and over 600 Nm of torque.

The design direction of Thomas Ingenlath: Releasing the full potential of the Volvo brand

The work of Thomas Ingenlath has been one of the best-kept secrets in the automotive industry for over a year. Until now.

"Volvo Cars was already transforming rapidly when I joined the company in 2012. My team and I have focused on creating a new interpretation of the design language. It will help taking this great brand in the desired direction," says Thomas Ingenlath.

This is how Thomas Ingenlath expresses the new design direction for Volvo Cars.

Why Volvo Cars?

"Everyone that knows me well would agree that Volvo is a perfect match for me. I have never been an instant crowd-pleaser who likes fast and loud designs. I am thoughtful. I like to explore the intellectual elements below the surface. If you do that right, the aesthetics will come naturally."

"Volvo is a human-centric brand with an exceptionally strong heritage. It is exciting to create a new design expression that supports the established brand values as well as the repositioning towards a more distinctive premium brand."

What's your view of Scandinavian Design?

"Well, since Volvo Cars is the only remaining automotive brand in Sweden, we are by definition the only carmaker that can create original Scandinavian Design. The challenge is to create a modern, desirable interpretation."

"To me, Scandinavian Design according to Volvo is firmly rooted in the values of the Swedish society and the way of life enabled by this unique environment. Our approach goes beyond just bringing Scandinavian design items and signatures into our cars. Our job is to understand the spirit and the confidence that make Scandinavian design so special. Then we must translate it into car design."

What is your approach?

"It is important to recognise that Scandinavian design will only be perceived as attractive if it is crafted with precision and attention to detail. Meticulous execution and consistent quality are prerequisites to qualify for the premium league of automakers."

Explain the new design direction.

"In my opinion, Volvo design has always had a certain authority. We aim to extend this calm, intelligent and strong side of our brand with a greater potency, modernity and expressiveness. Concept Coupé clearly expresses this direction."

"Outdoor activities are an important part of the Swedish lifestyle. We will continue to refine Volvo's strong connection to these activities with more emphasis on modernity. It's about making functionality an emotional experience. Just like an exclusive goose down jacket, our cars will have a true feeling of sophistication with an underlying strength and capability."

"Creativity is thriving in the Swedish society. This includes design and technology as well as the fashion, music and art scene. We use this as an inspiration for creating a new kind of attainable luxury. Our future cars will show that there are new, exciting ways to express the soul of Sweden."

What opportunities does the new Scalable Product Architecture create for the designers?

"The new architecture enables us to create the great proportions that are important to achieve a premium look. The dash to axle ratio is more generous than any other architecture I have worked with before. This gives us the opportunity to be up there among the top premium brands when it comes to proportions."

"The hip point is another example of the new opportunities. It is low enough to create a low profile on a sleek sedan without compromising headroom."

Which are the most the most prominent new design signatures?

"Every strong brand needs a set of visual keys that makes it unique. Future Volvos will be characterised by the distinctive iron mark in the floating grille, flanked by the T-shaped DRL lights. The larger bonnet with its new topography, the beltline spanning an elegant bow along the whole car and the sharpened shoulder connecting with the new rear light are other important design signatures. They all contribute to the confident stance. The overall simplicity, both exterior and interior, has a strong connection to the Scandinavian lifestyle."

How about the interiors?

"We will continue to build on the premium feel in the new Volvo V40. The new user interface with a large, portrait touch-screen in the centre console allows us to remove almost all buttons. This simplicity is perfectly in tune with our Scandinavian design heritage. It opens up clean surfaces that give us the opportunity to create a luxurious interior experience with new forms."

"We will deliver on our brand promise to make Volvo customers feel special by blending classic handcrafted elements with distinctive, surprising delight details."

New design direction injects emotion into Volvo's transformation journey

The Volvo Concept Coupé is the first expressive interpretation of a new brand direction where design has an elevated strategic importance to deliver more emotion into the Volvo brand.

"Our transformation plan includes a commitment to create a more premium vision of Volvo Cars. Releasing the emotional power of our human-centric design heritage is one of the key elements in this strategy," says Alain Visser, Senior Vice President Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group. He adds: "A more premium image is vital to gain momentum in our journey towards an annual sales volume of 800,000 cars. It also supports our price position versus our main competitors in the premium segments."

Building on recent success

The introduction of the Volvo V40 in 2012 was the first step in this direction. The positive media and customer feedback emphasises that Volvo Cars is running with the best in several important areas, including design.

The upcoming introduction of the new scalable architecture enables the company to accelerate the transformation.

The Volvo Concept Coupé is the first of a series of three concept cars that demonstrate the design possibilities created by the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). They pave the way for the introduction of the all-new Volvo XC90 in 2014.

Technology as an enabler for emotion

The new in-house developed architecture and engine programme are the enablers for a stronger emotional expression of the brand, both when it comes to the exterior design and a new approach to the interior, user interface and connectivity.

"Volvo's unique human-centric approach and the aim to inject more emotions into car design are perfect partners. Volvo Cars' caring, human-centric values are an integrated part of the Scandinavian culture and lifestyle. The challenge is to express this with a bolder, more distinctive design that is an all-important customer criteria for premium cars," says Thomas Ingenlath.

Design creates premium desirability

Truly premium brands are based on a complex mix of rational, qualitative parameters and strong emotional values that create desirability – and there are several examples of brands that have moved from mainstream to premium through a stronger focus on design.

"Case studies of brands that have made a similar journey to ours give us valuable input into the mechanisms that trigger the consumer's perception of premium. This, together with our own studies of people's views of Volvo Cars, becomes a valuable base for our design development," says Alain Visser.

Rational properties with added emotional value

The emotional aspect is also important when shaping the future of properties that are established Volvo territory among consumers:

Focus on safety has moved from offering protection in worst-case scenarios to creating features that support the driver and enhance the user experience.

Modern environmental care is able to combine low emissions and reduced fuel consumption with an enhanced driving experience – for instance through ingenious plug-in hybrid technology.

The classic functionality has moved beyond being practical. Volvo Cars' approach is to create human-centric features that actually make today's hectic life easier for the user.

"Reliable functionality has always been a no compromise prerequisite for Scandinavian designers. Up here, designs have to deal with a harsh reality that demands meticulous attention to detail and quality," says Thomas Ingenlath. He concludes: "Combining this with a distinctive design language that is inspired by this unique Scandinavian environment will give us a competitive edge that none of our competitors can match. You could say that we will continue to do what Volvo always has done. We will just do it much better and make it much more emotional."

"The V40 Cross Country retains its V40 stylishness by integrating the ruggedness in the design with meticulous attention to detail. It has an extrovert, expressive character that promises the open-minded adventurer a great time," says Simon Lamarre, exterior design manager for the V40 Cross Country.

D2 version with class-leadingCO2 emissions of 99 g/km

The D2 version of the V40 Cross Country comes with CO2 emissions at a class-leading 99 g/km – so there's no road tax to pay – while fuel costs are also kept low with up to 74 mpg fuel economy. The 1.6-litre diesel engine has 115 hp and 285 Nm of torque, including 15Nm over-boost. The D2 engine is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function.

Fuel-efficient diesels

The five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 turbo-diesel has been optimised for fuel-efficient driving pleasure. It delivers 177 hp and has torque of 400 Nm across a wide rpm range. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 7.9 seconds with the automatic gearbox (8.2 sec with manual). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 64 mpg (117 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 54 mpg (137 g/km) with the automatic (EU Combined).

In addition there is the 2.0-litre D3 producing 150 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

Both turbo-diesels are available with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.

All-Wheel-Drive enhances capability

The V40 Cross Country features class-leading driving dynamics with All-Wheel-Drive as standard on the T5 petrol turbo to enhance the all-road, all-weather, capability.

The five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 engine has a power output of 254 hp and 400 Nm of torque, including 40 Nm over-boost delivered during acceleration. It comes with automatic transmission and acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 6.0 seconds. Fuel consumption is 34 mpg (EU Combined).

There is also the T4 petrol, a 1.6-litre GTDi engine with 180 horsepower and maximum torque of 270 Nm, including 30 Nm over-boost. Fuel consumption is 51 mpg. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.

Hill Descent Control

To make altitude-changing adventures more comfortable for the driver, the V40 Cross Country also features Hill Descent Control on the T5 AWD version, which controls the car's speed automatically when driving down steep inclines. The V40 T5 AWD Cross Country also has a practical Hill Hold function that makes starting on a hill easier.

Smooth Automatic Transmissions

The T5 version comes with an automatic six-speed Geartronic gearbox only, while the T4 is available with the automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. The Powershift operates in principle as two parallel manual gearboxes with separate clutches, a system that provides quick and fuel-saving gear changes.

Start/Stop on all versions

All petrol and diesel engine versions have start/stop and braking energy regeneration, no matter whether they are fitted with a manual or automatic gearbox.

Versatility for life's little adventures

The two-piece, 40/60 split, rear seat backrest can be easily folded, and the car can be equipped with a versatile "extra" floor in the load compartment that provides a concealed storage area and also creates several other useful possibilities:

Fold it up and get a grocery holder

Fold it away and get best luggage volume

Flat floor for loading long items

Flip it over to protect items and maximize cargo volume

The front passenger seat can also be folded forward to create even more space for extra long objects.

The accessory range includes a Parcel Shelf Net that keeps smaller items secure and in order, as well as a Load Organiser that includes a load compartment divider, a load belt and two floor rails.

Smart storage

Below the armrest is a storage compartment suitable for CDs and other small items, whilst also housing the connector for a USB/iPod. The armrest itself can be adjusted to provide extra support for the driver. Two cup-holders and a 12V power outlet are integrated in the console in front of the armrest.

The glove compartment includes space for two drinks cans or bottles that are kept cool with cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system.

Another smart detail for the keen winter adventurer is the specially designed, drained storage unit for an ice scraper in both front door panels.

Seven different mood light options

The interior lighting is designed to give a "theatre lighting" feel. LED lamps are used to light up strategic areas. The driver can enjoy a red-to-blue setting that adapts the light to the interior temperature, or choose between another seven mood themes. The reading lights front and rear can be dimmed.

The V40 Cross Country can also be specified with a stylish TFT digital instrument cluster, which allows the driver to select one of three modes – Elegance, Performance or Eco – depending on what information they prefer to see while driving.

Keep in touch via mobile application

There is also a mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. An extension of Volvo On Call, the app opens up a range of connectivity possibilities, is free to download via the iPhone and Android app stores and is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance. The app allows users to view information about their car on their mobile phone, so a driver can check fuel levels before starting their journey for example, or get information on wiper fluid or oil levels, or check whether the car has been locked.

Focus on Europe and China

Volvo Car Corporation expects to sell 17,000 units per year of the new Volvo V40 Cross Country. Around 50 per cent of the total volume will go to European customers and around 30 percent to Chinese buyers. UK sales are expected to be between 1200-1500 in the first full year.

The V40 Cross Country will be built alongside the standard V40 and R-Design models at Volvo Car Corporation's production plant in Ghent, Belgium. Prices will be announced and orders taken in early October, with production starting in November. Customer deliveries are expected to start during January 2013.

Note:Except for unique details mentioned in this press release, the new V40 Cross Country is available with the same features as the standard version of the all-new Volvo V40. Detailed information is included in the previous Volvo V40 press releases.

Press Release:

Volvo Car Corporation launches V40 R-Design:

Dynamic look and agile drive for individualists with a fast pace

Launched in stunning Rebel Blue, the new Volvo V40 R-Design is a perfect match for those who want a head-turner that radiates a truly stylish and dynamic look. The visual promise of a life in the fast lane is confirmed by the driver-centric interior and an intense, agile driving experience with performance up to 254 horsepower.

"The V40 R-Design is designed around the performance-minded individual with a passion for those things that add extra spice to life. The meticulous attention to detail covers the expressive design as well as the agile, precise performance," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Corporation.

The attention-grabbing exterior has been specially developed for buyers who want to put their very own stamp on their car.

The unique R-Design front features a silk-metal framed high-gloss grille. The sporty stance is further enhanced with an ironstone diffuser, silk-metal finished details and twin exhaust tailpipes. The five-spoke diamond-cut wheels (17" or 18") complete the stylish, dynamic look.

On top of the Rebel Blue livery, the V40 R-Design buyer has a choice of six other exterior colours.

New generation R-Design interior with blue interactive dashboard

The interactive dash board in the all-new V40 has already got a lot of positive attention, both from media and customers. The possibility to switch between three layouts with different configuration and functionality - Elegance, Eco and Performance - is mirrored in the V40 R-design. But here all of the modes come in the same radiant blue colour.

"Inside, the new generation R-Design seats and interior details emphasize the distinctive Scandinavian design aura of the all-new V40. R-Design appeals especially to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design. We have talked to them a lot to ensure that every single detail contributes to the individualistic, refined expression they desire," says Lex Kerssemakers.

The seats feature a blend of black Nubuck textile and perforated leather, crowned by an embroidered R-design logo with a blue "R". Full leather seats are available as an option.

The comfortable, in-command driver environment also includes a specially designed steering wheel, gear shifter, handbrake and sport pedals. The unique R-Design aura is enhanced by a combination of new aluminium inlays with a perforated look, black leather, matching stitching and a black headliner.

Sporty drive with a wide range of engines

R-Design can be combined with all engines available for the all-new Volvo V40, from the D2 diesel with 115 horsepower and CO2 emissions at 94 g/km (3.6 l/100 km) to the high-performance T5 petrol turbo with 254 horsepower.

"Creating a driving experience that fulfils the R-Design buyers´ passion for a fast-paced life is not just about speed and acceleration. Agility and precision are equally important for these performance-minded individuals. Both the standard Dynamic chassis and the optional Sport chassis are designed to offer a class-leading, intense driving experience, no matter if you prioritise maximum fuel-efficiency or rapid acceleration," says Lex Kerssemakers.

Lower and firmer Sport chassis

The chassis has been developed in cooperation with Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren in the Volvo Polestar Black R team.

The optional Sport chassis is lowered 10 mm compared with the Dynamic chassis. Springs and shock absorbers have a firmer setting, resulting in responsive driving pleasure with full control. The front McPherson struts have 25 mm piston rods. The stiffness enables the structure to absorb lateral loads better.

At the rear the V40 has monotube dampers, featuring compression and return damping via the same valve. This gives shorter, faster fluid flow, which in turn means that the damper responds more quickly. Anti-roll bars with increased diameter also contribute to the sporty drive.

The standard Dynamic chassis' rigid body and low centre of gravity also promote an alert, quick-responding character that focuses on the driving experience, yet without compromising ride comfort.

"The V40 R-Design is agile, responsive and fun to drive. Both chassis offer the enthusiastic driver a feeling of total control. You get both that connected response that makes a winding country road so much fun as well as the precise, nimble moves it takes to stay on top of busy urban traffic," says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Corporation.

Driver orientated appeal attracts younger buyers too

The new Volvo V40 R-Design will be available in all markets that sell the Volvo V40. Volvo Car Corporation expects that around 10 percent of all V40 buyers will choose the R-Design version.

"Previous R-Design models have played an important role for increasing our sales and for lowering the age of our customer base. We believe that the new V40 R-Design will give this trend another boost," says Lex Kerssemakers.

Note: Except for unique details mentioned in this press release, the new V40 R-Design is available with the same design and technology as the all-new Volvo V40. Detailed information is included in the Volvo V40 press releases about Design, Sensus, Driving and Safety & Support.

Press Release:

Upgraded Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 get latest infotainment and safety technology plus even more efficient drivelines

The Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 are now being upgraded with a number of features that further emphasise the company's focus on cars designed around the needs and wishes of people in modern society.

The new features include the latest user-friendly Volvo Sensus infotainment system, enhanced technology that makes driving even safer and more comfortable, and refined drivelines that offer higher performance and lower fuel consumption.

'These cars mark yet another step forward in our determination to be the brand that best interprets what buyers of modern prestige cars want. Concern for the individual's well-being is the very core of our Scandinavian origin. On this basis we create a logical, intuitive and ergonomically optimised driver's environment that promotes a feeling of relaxed control,' says Volvo Cars' President and CEO Stefan Jacoby.

Volvo Sensus is an excellent example of how Volvo Cars refines the driver environment. The new infotainment system made its debut in the Volvo S60 and V60 in 2010. Now the Volvo XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 also get the same feature.

Volvo Sensus - ergonomic high-tech

In Sensus, all information is presented on a five-inch or seven-inch colour screen in the upper part of the centre stack. The screen is positioned high up to make it easy for the driver to keep his or hers eyes on the road.

Pressing once on the 'My Car' button in the centre stack offers access to a range of settings, such as for City Safety, Collision Warning, Pedestrian Detection, Driver Alert System, Active Cruise Control, lighting, door mirrors, climate unit, central locking and audio system.

If the customer chooses a multimedia audio system, Volvo Sensus comes upgraded with the larger seven-inch screen that also displays information and images from the navigation system, phone, reversing camera, panorama camera, DVD player, digital TV and so on.

The Bluetooth connection has been upgraded to allow not only hands-free phone conversations but also music streaming from your preferred Bluetooth enabled portable music player. Volvo is actually the only brand to offer Bluetooth music streaming throughout the entire vehicle range.

Integrated navigation with voice commands is available as an option as well as an entertainment system for rear-seat passengers. This package includes among other things DVD player, two eight-inch screens integrated into the front seat headrests, wireless headphones and remote control.

Full control without distraction

All the functions can be controlled via buttons built into the steering wheel or via touch buttons located just below the colour screen.

'Volvo Sensus does not distract the driver from driving. The idea is that the technology should be so intuitive that the user can manoeuvre the menus without having to first read through the instruction manual. We are one of the few manufacturers to offer the driver access to all the system's functions via buttons in the steering wheel,' says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars.

World-class audio experience

The most advanced audio unit, Premium, has a class D digital 5x130W amplifier, subwoofer, Dolby Digital in combination with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, the latest MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories and 10 loudspeakers.

The market-leading MultEQ technology from Audyssey Laboratories eliminates the distortion that might otherwise be caused by the passenger compartment's particular acoustic properties. The result is crisper and clearer sound for everyone in the car.

In addition to Premium Sound, which is combined with a seven-inch screen, there are three other audio system levels. All have been tailored for the car by Volvo Cars' in-house experts.

Now also with Pedestrian Detection

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, previously presented in the Volvo S60, V60 and XC60, is now also available in the Volvo V70, XC70 and S80. It is a support function designed to help the driver detect dangerous situations and it can actively help avoid the nightmare scenario of hitting a pedestrian.

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake uses radar and a camera to monitor pedestrians in front of the car. The system initially provides a warning to alert the driver so he or she can brake or steer clear of the pedestrian. If the driver does not respond, the car automatically brakes with full force moments before the collision becomes unavoidable. With automatic braking, collisions can in certain circumstances be avoided at speeds below 35 km/h.

If all cars had Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, it is estimated that the number of pedestrian fatalities could be reduced by more than 20 percent. The reduction in serious injuries would be almost 30 percent. In three out of ten cases, a collision could be entirely avoided.

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake has somewhat impaired 'vision' in certain conditions, for instance in the dark and in poor weather.

Adaptive cruise control down to standstill

The collision warning system has also been programmed to respond to vehicles in front that are at a standstill or are moving in the same direction. In certain situations, a collision can be avoided if the speed difference between the two vehicles is less than 35 km/h.

In the area of comfort the Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 equipped with automatic transmission can now be specified with the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically helps maintain a constant safety margin to the vehicle in front.

What is new is that this system now operates all the way down to standstill. The car accelerates automatically once the traffic starts moving again.

City Safety as standard

One other new feature is that City Safety is standard in all three models. This system can lessen the severity of or entirely avoid low-speed rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 30km/h.

City Safety keeps a watch on vehicles in front with the help of a laser sensor built into the windscreen at the height of the rear-view mirror. The car automatically brakes if the driver does not respond in time when the car in front slows down or stops - of if the driver is driving too fast towards a stationary object.

If the relative speed difference between the two vehicles is less than 15 km/h, the collision can be entirely avoided. If the speed difference is between 15-30 km/h, the speed of impact is reduced to minimise the effects of the collision.

Other new features inside and out

Among the other new features in the Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 are:

* New body colours Biarritz Blue (V70 and S80) and Twilight Bronze (XC70).

* Redesigned headlamps. Active Xenon lights are optional.

* LED turn indicators integrated into the door mirrors (V70 and S80).

* Two new wheel designs for the V70 and S80 and one for the XC70.

* Inside the passenger compartment there are two new highlight colours for the upholstery: Sangiovese Red (V70 and S80) and Blond (V70, XC70 and S80).

In addition there is a new three-spoke steering wheel, enhanced décor inlays and redesigned interior lighting.

Increased performance and lower fuel consumption

The Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 are the first in the model range to feature higher performance versions of the five-cylinder D5 and D3 turbodiesels.

In the D5 engine Volvo Cars' engine experts have succeeded in boosting performance and torque from 205 hp/420 Nm to 215 hp and 440 Nm while at the same time reducing fuel consumption by eight percent. This means that the fuel consumption of a Volvo S80 D5 with manual gearbox is now just 4.9 l/100 km (EU Combined), corresponding to 129 g of CO2 per kilometre.

Upgraded D5 engine with enhanced performance and reduced fuel consumption

The upgraded versions of the Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 are the first in the model range to feature sharpened versions of the five-cylinder D5 and D3 turbodiesels.

In the D5 engine Volvo Cars' engine experts have boosting performance and torque from 205 hp/420 Nm to 215 hp and 440 Nm while at the same time reducing fuel consumption by eight percent.

This means that the fuel consumption of the Volvo S80 D5 with manual gearbox and start/stop is now just 4.9 l/100 km (EU Combined), corresponding to 129 g of CO2 per kilometre.

The quest for better driveability combined with lower fuel consumption and less environmental impact has led to increased focus on internal friction inside the engine.

'It's actually all about improvements in several areas that together make the cars both more enjoyable and cheaper to drive. This is the science of the small incremental steps. The engines are already so optimised that it takes many man-hours to identify and refine the tiny details that can make them even more efficient,' says Derek Crabb, Vice President, Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Cars.

Already best in class in 2008

With advanced solutions such as sequential twin-turbo technology, ceramic glowplugs and piezo-electric fuel injectors, the new five-cylinder 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel had among the best fuel economy figures in its segment when it was presented in the Volvo S80 at the end of 2008. What is more, it was the first Euro 5 engine in its class.

At its introduction, the high-performance D5 engine offered 205 hp and maximum torque of 420 Nm.

One new feature was a twin-turbo setup with two different-sized turbochargers operating in tandem to provide added power across a wider rev band. This configuration gives alert response and fast, powerful acceleration high up the rev range.

Advanced injection technology using piezo-electric fuel injectors was another new feature, ensuring highly precise distribution of fuel in the combustion chamber. This promotes efficient fuel incineration and low emissions. At the same time, this technology and its efficient combustion system help create a pleasant engine note.

Scaled-down D3 with shorter stroke

The medium-performance D3 with 163 hp and 400 Nm of torque was introduced in the Volvo S60 and V60 in 2010. It is in principle the same engine as the 2.4-litre version, but with a shorter stroke that reduces displacement to 2.0 litres.

Its injection system has the same type of piezo-electric fuel injectors as the D5, but tailored for the smaller engine. The injectors reduce combustion with exceptionally quick and precise injection sequences under high pressure. The result is particularly effective combustion.

In order to give the car even better driving properties, it is fitted with a variable-geometry turbocharger.

A range of upgrades

Now upgraded versions of both engines are being launched to coincide with the latest enhancements to the Volvo V70, XC70 and S80.

The refined D5 engine now offers 215 hp and maximum torque is no less than 440 Nm, while the D3 remains at 163 hp and 400 Nm. However, the two-litre diesel engine's driveability is now far improved thanks to fine-tuning of the turbocharger. This is an excellent example of the fact that efficiency enhancement in modern combustion engines is now taking place at microscopic levels.

'When comparing modern diesel engines, torque is of far greater interest than the number of horsepower. It is the available torque that gives the diesel the sort of acceleration and potent driveability that many petrol engines can barely match,' explains Derek Crabb.

The enhancements in a nutshell

Most of the latest engine-related improvements apply to both the D5 and D3 engines:

* Both the camshafts and connecting rods have been weight-optimised, that is to say they do the same efficient job using a smaller amount of steel.

* The new piston rings are of low-friction type.

* The oil pump is chain-driven.

* With the piston cooling valves controlled solely by demand instead of opening regularly, consumption can be reduced.

* The new vacuum pump has been optimised to affect the engine as little as possible.

* The D5 engine now gets the same lighter type of connecting rod that the 2-litre D3 had when it was introduced in 2010.

* All six-speed manual versions also get start/stop, which switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill. The engine fires up immediately when the driver presses the clutch pedal.

* All variants are also available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

* In autumn 2011 the Volvo S80 and V70 with D3 engine and automatic transmission will become available with the start/stop function.

Lower fuel consumption

The improved driving properties of the turbodiesels are accompanied by lower fuel consumption figures for both engines. The upgraded D5 engine, for instance, uses around eight percent less diesel fuel than the previous variant in an S80 with manual gearbox.

This means that the fuel consumption (EU Combined) of a Volvo S80 D5 is now just 4.9 l/100 km (129 g CO2/km) with manual gearbox and start/stop. The corresponding figures for the automatic version are 6.0l/100 km (158 g/km).

The figures for a Volvo V70 are 5.1 l/100 km (134 g/km) with the manual gearbox and 6.2 l/100 km (164 g/km)with the automatic. Fuel consumption in the XC70 is 5.6 l/100 km (149 g/km) in the FWD version with manual gearbox and 6.8 l/100 km (179 g/km) with the automatic.

The corresponding figures for the D3 engine with manual gearbox are 4.9 l/100 km (129 g/km) in the Volvo S80, 5.2 l/100 km (137 g/km) in the V70 and 5,5 l/100 km (144 g/km) in the XC70 (DRIVe version).

DRIVe engine with increased performance

The four-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel is now available in a Euro 5 variant with horsepower increased from 109 to 115. Maximum torque remains at 270 Nm. This engine is fitted to the DRIVe variants of the Volvo S80 and V70, both with manual gearbox, start/stop and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km.

FlexiFuel on certain markets

In certain markets, both the S80 and the V70 can also be specified with a 1.6-litre engine in an ethanol-powered FlexiFuel version. The customer can choose between Powershift and a manual gearbox.

Volvo Car Corporation to put plug-in hybrids on the market in 2012

Volvo is introducing a series-produced plug-in hybrid as early as 2012. Pure electric power from the battery will cover the daily transport needs of 75 percent of European drivers. For longer distances, an efficient diesel hybrid engine automatically takes over. The combined range is about 1200 kilometres. Carbon dioxide emissions will average out at 49 grams per kilometre, with fuel consumption of 1.9 litres per 100 km.

Volvo is convinced that in the future, customers will continue to want safe, comfortable cars with good driving properties and generous load-carrying ability. Irrespective of whether they are powered by electricity or other fuels.

Plug-in hybrids are an attractive car type offering the user the best from both electric power and conventional drivelines: extremely low fuel consumption and CO2 levels, combined with a long range and high performance.

'The new Volvo plug-in will be a truly enjoyable car to drive, featuring Volvo's high safety and comfort standards. At the same time, CO2 levels and fuel consumption will be as low as half that available on the market today.' says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

Volvo plug-in hybrid advantages:

Fuel consumption, running costs and CO2 emissions are very low

The car is a 'normal' Volvo, with all its customary good properties

It is conveniently recharged at home via a regular wall socket

It is an enjoyable car to drive, offering high performance

Electric power with CO2 levels close to zero

Electricity is highly suited as a car fuel. The electric motor has a high efficiency rating and consumes about one-fifth as much energy as a corresponding engine running on fossil fuel. Volvo's plug-in hybrid cars will be propelled by a robust electric motor that receives its power from a lithium-ion battery. What is more, additional electricity is generated every time the car brakes.

The battery is conveniently recharged at home via a regular wall socket. Electricity as a fuel is far cheaper than petrol or diesel, which results in low operating costs. The battery will take about five hours to recharge.

The range will be about 1200 kilometres, just like in a conventional diesel car. It will be able to be driven up to 50 kilometres on pure electric power and when running on the battery, emissions from the exhaust pipe will be non-existent. If the battery is recharged using electricity from renewable sources, the net emission of CO2 will be close to zero, even in a lifecycle perspective. Volvo's dealers will offer customers who buy a plug-in hybrid a special contract for the supply of renewable energy. This agreement has been created in cooperation with the company's partner, Swedish electricity supplier Vattenfall.

Efficient diesel engines as a complement

As a complement to the electric motor, one of Volvo's fuel-efficient diesel engines will also be fitted under the bonnet. It will be optimised to run on renewable synthetic diesel and will meet the tough forthcoming exhaust emission requirements.

The diesel engine can be run separately or in combination with the electric motor for optimal power and energy utilisation. For example, the diesel engine can support or replace electric power at high speeds or when the battery charge drops, while the electric motor can offer additional torque at low engine revs. Being able to combine these two power sources makes it possible to offer high performance and trouble-free use by the owner.

Most car trips cover short distances, to and from work. This means that the forthcoming Volvo plug-in hybrid will cover the transport requirements of most people. For longer distances, the diesel engine starts up automatically, giving the car the same properties and range as a conventional diesel car.

According to the standardised NEDC certification driving cycle, CO2 emissions from Volvo's plug-in hybrid will be lower than 50 grams/kilometre. Cars with emissions below 50 grams of CO2/kilometre will probably have the most favourable incentives in many European countries. In addition to tax relief, these countries will offer a discount of about 5000 euros on the purchase price, a move that is expected to set the standard for the rest of Europe too.

'We are focusing strongly on plug-in hybrids in order to meet the demands for low CO2 emissions and to provide sustainable road transportation. We naturally expect that the relevant authorities will offer subsidies to boost developments, speeding up the creation of a market for this type of car,' says Stephen Odell.

Today's electricity capacity covers requirements

Plug-in hybrids consume less electricity than most people believe. The fact is that a single medium-sized wind-power station can produce renewable electricity to cover the annual consumption of 1000-2000 plug-in hybrids in normal use. Even a large number of plug-in hybrids on the roads would be able to be supplied within the framework of the electric grid's existing capacity. If 15 percent of Europe's cars consisted of plug-in hybrids, this would mean that total electricity requirements would only increase by between 1 and 3 percent.

Through simple household energy savings, for instance by switching off the PC and TV overnight and using low-energy bulbs, the total energy requirement would probably be able to be kept at current levels. To put this into perspective, the energy-efficiency improvements that Volvo Cars has implemented in its factories in Ghent and Göteborg over the past four years correspond to the annual electricity consumption of 15,000 plug-in hybrid cars.

Plug-in hybrids - market potential

The purchase price of a plug-in hybrid is expected to be considerably higher than for a conventional diesel car since the batteries are still expensive. Fuel costs on electric power will be about one-third compared with driving on diesel, and this partially compensates for the higher purchase price, although not fully.

Volvo Cars assesses that plug-in hybrids will be commercially viable for certain customer categories in 2012, gradually widening in appeal as battery price and performance continuously improve.

Skipping stages in technological development

For the time being, Volvo Cars is postponing its plans to produce what is known as a full-hybrid based on a diesel engine.

The strategy that Volvo is adopting to start series-producing plug-in cars as early as 2012 is to exploit already existing, tried and tested platform architecture for major components such as the body and engine. Instead of waiting for an entirely new generation of car models, the company is saving time by using innovative solutions to install the battery and electric motor beside a conventional driveline. In this way, the new technology will get out to car buyers that much sooner.

Plug-in hybrids the result of industrial cooperation

In January 2007, Volvo Cars and energy supplier Vattenfall launched a joint project with the aim of testing and developing plug-in technology. A new company was founded, V2 Plug-in-Hybrid Vehicle Partnership, as a result of this cross-border initiative.

The formation of the joint company with Vattenfall creates entirely new preconditions for developing next-generation green technology in a highly efficient way. Working in partnership is something that the company regards as an absolute necessity in the drive towards a sustainable future.

Concept You from Volvo Car Corporation:

Luxurious Scandinavian design with intuitive smart pad technology

The Volvo Car Corporation now takes the next bold step in the evolution of the company's upcoming large luxury sedan.

The Concept You, revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, combines a sleek coupe-like exterior with a luxurious high-tech interior that keeps the driver in command via intuitive smart pad technology.

The Concept You picks up where the Concept Universe, revealed at Auto Shanghai earlier this year, left off. It gives the global car buying public another exciting glimpse of the Volvo Car Corporation's future.

With a full interior, Concept You allows luxury sedan customers to fully experience the craftsmanship and intuitive technology that will be the hallmark of future Volvos.

'The new Concept You roofline stretches all the way back to the tail lamps - creating that dynamic fastback look that is very much in vogue among European car buyers at the moment,' says Peter Horbury, Vice President Design at the Volvo Car Corporation.

Touch-control cockpit and pure craftsmanship

The luxurious interior of the Concept You features a blend of intuitive smart pad technology and first-class craftsmanship.

'The Concept You explores new territories in our search for the ultimate intuitive car that makes the owners manual a thing of the past. Smart phones and smart pads have brought mobile infotainment into a new era. Here, we use a number of touch-screens to replace buttons and controls in order to make the driver totally connected, totally in control. The technology also helps us to create a refreshingly uncluttered interior,' explains Peter Horbury.

The Concept You control centre consists of four main areas; a digital Driver Information Monitor (DIM), a head-up display on the windscreen, a touch-screen in the upper part of the centre console and a touch-screen between the two individual rear seats. The wood/leather steering wheel has aluminium and glass paddles with integrated touch-screens.

The touch-screen in the upper part of the centre console remains in sleeping mode until the driver looks at it. A hidden infrared camera registers the eye movements and information is displayed on the screen.

Another sensor registers hand movements and triggers the Infotainment system's control mode. The possibilities vary depending on whether the screen is approached by the driver or by the front passenger.

'Certain functions, such as surfing the Web, are only accessible from the passenger side while the car is rolling. The technology knows who is the present operator and adapts itself automatically,' says Peter Horbury.

The driver can 'flip' data from the central touch-screen to the head-up display - and can exchange data with the rear passengers. A light guide in the free-floating centre console indicates file transfer.

Unique air-powered sound system

The Infotainment system also integrates a high-end sound system from Alpine. It features the unique 'FreshAir' subwoofer - a not yet released technology that uses the air outside the car to create the ultimate listening experience.

The sound system consists of small, optimised units that considerably cut weight - while still producing a better sound than today's systems.

Comfortable and cultivated

The interior is dedicated to offer design-driven customers a comfortable, cultivated, Scandinavian inspired environment that is also user-focused and refreshingly uncomplicated. Every detail has been chosen with the customer experience in focus.

The interior is driver-orientated at the front and comfortably relaxed in the rear. The dynamic feel and dark colour scheme in the front seats fades seamlessly towards the rear until it fully transforms into a light rear seat haven of calmness.

The rear seat passengers are embraced by pure comfort, as if their favourite lounge were magically integrated into the car. The interior moulds into the rear seat and becomes part of the seating environment.

The Volvo Car Corporation has partnered with several other famous brands in order to create a genuine feeling of luxury with the right Scandinavian touch.

Leather, suede and suit fabric

The four individual seats, inspired by ultra-comfortable chairs, blend chrome-free leather from Bridge of Wear with Dinamica ecological suede. The off-black front seats have suede in the centre to create optimal grip. The soft beige rear seats are designed for pure comfort with leather in the centre and suede on the sides.

The Concept You design also integrates the luxury qualities of a tailor made suit into the car. The back of the front seats and the door panels feature exclusive Italian fabric and designs from Swedish fashion house Oscar Jacobson.

The designers have also been generous with large, handcrafted pieces of walnut - accompanied by leather panels, Dinamica suede roof lining and carefully chosen aluminium details.

Hand-tufted wool carpets

The wooden floor, which echoes Scandinavian homes, is covered with a specially designed hand-tufted carpet from world-famous Swedish brand Kasthall. Just like the rest of the interior it fades from dark in the front to light in the rear. The front texture has a sporty firmness, while the rear part of the carpet is luxuriously soft.

'The interior is full of classic forms, materials and textures, used with a twist to create a special contemporary luxury experience. It is exceptionally refined, yet with all the simplistic assets that make Volvo champions of the uncomplicated,' explains Peter Horbury. He concludes:

'We are carving out a unique position among the luxury car makers with our special kind of Scandinavian Design. It will be unmatched in performance, technology and craftsmanship, but without superficiality or complication.'

Inspiration from Georg Jensen

The Concept You is finished in a light blue, liquid metal paint from DuPont. The ventilated disc brakes are developed by Volvo's racing specialists Polestar.

The car's fast silhouette is emphasised by the 21-inch polished aluminium wheels with a twisted twin-spoke design and tyres from Pirelli (275/30/21).

Up front, the Concept You grille - which has a more classic appearance than the Concept Universe - features details with the same beautifully polished craftsmanship.

'The design of the wheels, the grille and details in the innovative headlamps have been inspired by the exquisite works of world-famous Danish design house Georg Jensen. Their precious items capture the essence of Scandinavian design. Uncluttered, organic surfaces and superb craftsmanship that radiate timeless luxury,' says Peter Horbury. He adds:

'This eternal beauty of Georg Jensen design is what we are aiming for with the whole concept car. Just like the finest luxury goods, this design should feel handcrafted and durable enough to stand the test of time.'

The dipped beam comes from LED lamps in four 'ice blocks' on top of the high beam lights. The 'ice blocks' are installed with the same technology that jewellers use for mounting precious stones.
