V-8 FORD heart, scores of privateers went the same route with their Healeys, creating some of the most exciting American Specials in history. As one can imagine, changing the weight-to-horsepower ratio from 28:1 to something like 7:1 made all the difference in the world. The car offered here, VIN *226292*, is one of the earliest such conversions still in existence, having been purchased brand new by John Scranton, chief engineer for Pacific State Steel in Fremont, Calif., in 1955. In 1958, when the Big Healey was just three years old, its owner embarked on a full-scale show-and-race build-up. The car's show career was capped by two appearances at the world-famous Oakland Roadster Show; its quarter-mile performance at the fabled Fremont Drag Strip is the stuff of legends. Sometime during the early 1970s, the Healey caught the eye of a Gentleman from Alameda, who garaged and pampered the car for the next 34 years, showing it occasionally. Amazingly, the Healey still retains its original, small California "Pink Slip" and the irreplaceable, matching, black-and-yellow license plate. Just like in the day, the BN1 is motivated by a balanced and blueprinted Chevrolet small block engine, and it's still fearsomely fast. According to the last owner, the 4-bolt-main block contains lightened crank and rods, topped by camel hump cylinder heads ported and polished by ACE Head Shop, finished with a period set of M/T alloy valve covers, the spent gases escaping via a custom-bent set of aluma-coated headers. All those wild horses are delivered via a close ratio M21 4-speed transmission to the big '57 Oldsmobile rear, which was narrowed, hung on Traction Masters, and features 33-spline axles and a 3.90:1 ratio.
