Up for auction is my 1960 AC Ace Bristol, BEX 1146, the 1960 New York Auto Show car. When purchased by the prior owner almost 35 years ago, BEX 1146 had already been converted to an early 60s, built- up, Ford 289 engine with vintage Mallory electronic ignition and Ford 4 speed manual transmission, (wonderful, hollow-organ-vibrating rumble at idle; noisy enough at speed that you'll never be able to sneak up on anybody or any thing.) Both longitudinal and diagonal welded bracing on and between the chassis rails had been installed (see photo). Special, and possibly unique, heavy duty Dunlop wire wheels were also present at that time. These are wider than standard Ace factory equipment with thicker spokes and additional offset. They carry a Dunlop production code (not catalogued) numerically between the standard issue and the later Cobra style wheel, according to info from a noted wheel restorer who mounted current tires. Firmly sprung with a very sporting ride;while thought to have been configured for possible competition work, no racing history is currently available. The front fender gills, dash and instrument conversion were also present when he purchased BEX 1146. In the early 90s the prior owner had the car professionally refurbished and painted dark metallic grey, and subsequently showed it and used it sparingly. The car has an aluminum body, front disc brakes/rear Alfin (?) drums, leather bucket seats, Simpson seat belts, and is equipped with turn signals, tonneau, top and frame, side curtains and fitted case, new, chrome spare with unused matching Vredstein tire. No original tools present.
