The car for sale is chassis number 1043 (the 43rd car produced) and is just 3 chassis numbers away from the priceless 1966 Le Mans winning car (1046). It was built in May 1966 at the Ford Advanced Vehicles facility in Slough, England. It was then flown to the Shelby American plant in Los Angeles. It's first owner was a parts supplier to Carroll Shelby. It was used as a road car for several years, before ending up back in Southern California and being upgraded to competition specs by Shelby American mechanics. 1043 then competed in many west coast events and eventually appearing as a rare participant on the vintage racing circuit. It's has raced on just about every american road race circuit and is a regular participant in Shelby/GT40 reunions and Shelby American Conventions.

The car retains it's original 289 small block (#SGT6) and it's original Type-1 ZF Transaxle. The engine is upgraded with period-correct Gurney-Westlake heads, and original Weber carbs. The engine is upgraded to full competition specs, with dry-sump lubrication, titanium valves, upgraded cam and valve train assembly. It currently displaces 331 cu. inches and turns over 500 H.P.

The suspension components are true to the original car, with larger rotors and calipers used for racing. All other components are period correct! The car wears period Halibrand aluminum rims and has a spare set of orginal magnesium Halibrand rims.

The body is all original, the competition nose and rear are orignal Ford Special Vehicles Group fiberglass sections, (originally purchased from Shelby American in 1966). The car also comes with it's orginal street nose and rear body sections!

The chassis is all orginal, never wrecked or damaged. It is in excellent condition with no rust. The car is well-known in the GT40 community for being truly original, with original patina.
1043 is active on the historic racing circuit in the US. In 2005 it won the HSR Championship of Makes Class Championship. It has also participated in the Monterey Historics, Shelby American Convention Races (2nd Place Overall), Rolex Fall Festival at Limerock (3rd Place), and HSR Daytona Continental Historics (2nd Place). It is always a winner at any car show, including taking first place in the U.S. Sports car Class, World Sports Car Class at the prestigious 2005 Greenwich Concour D'Elegance. This is truly a spectacular looking and performance car. As a racer, 1043 comes with a fairly extensive spares package. The car is maintained and managed by Cobra Automotive of Wallingford, CT, which is one of the foremost Shelby shops in the country. The car is maintained with a "money is no object" philosophy, which means every time it is driven it receives a full pre-race and post-race regimen.

The new owner will also recieve an extensive folio of original documentation including original Shelby American invoices, airfreight and spares invoices.

There are fewer than 75 orginal Mark I's left in the world and many are outside of the United States. The owner of this car will have one of the most highly sought after cars on the planet!

The Ford GT40 is a high performance sports car and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times in a row, from 1966 to 1969 (1966 being the Mk II, 1967 the Mk IV, and 1968-1969 the oldest chassis design, the Mk I). It is so far the only racecar built in America (Mk IV only) to win overall at Le Mans (1967 Mk IV). It was built to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari (who won at Le Mans six times in a row from 1960 to 1965).
