Repainted once in the original color about 15 years ago. The paint is still nice, but is not in show condition. There are some small chips in the paint behind the rear wheels. Very nice and solid body. Nice original cowl induction style fibreglass hood. When repainted a little filler was used in the bottom of the very back of the quarter panel on the driver's side. This is not visible, but a careful check with the magnet found this small and limited area. Otherwise the body is totally solid. Excellent original chrome, trim, glass and wheels. The vinyl top is like new. (The vinyl body side moldings are attached with dual sided tape, and can be removed for a cleaner look.) Interior: Very nice original interior. No cracks or tears anywhere. Excellent dash, doorpanels, console, seats, headliner and carpet. Tach and all gauges work. The only non original item is the radio. The nice original interior truly reflects the car's low milage. The original collapsable spare wheel and the pressure bottle is in the trunk. Mechanical: Excellent overall mechanical condition. The 401 runs strong, and the car rides firm and smooth. No oil consumption or smoking. Auto transmission and Twin Grip rear end. Except for an aftermarket exhaust system and chrome valve covers, everything remains original. The underhood paint and decals are factory original and the underhood area has not been detailed. Only the breather has been refinished with new paint and decals.Well maintained car with newer shocks, mufflers etc. When the car is parked for some time there is a small oil leak. Everything on the car works, except for the clock and the AC. (The AC belt was removed after the freon had evaporated, but the compressor spins fine). Factory options: 401 engine, Go Package, Twin Grip differential, Power steering, Power Disc Brakes, Vinyl top, Spoilers, Rally Pac with gauges & tach, Domino interior, Console, Air Condition, Tinted glass, Rear defog, Fadeaway T stripe on hood, Dual sport mirrors, 15" slot style wheels, Sport steering wheel, Inside hood release, HD cooling. (As in earlier years, the fibreglass hood was included in the Go Package, but please note that the flapper door on the breather was discontinued for 1974). From studying the original sales brochure, only the tilt wheel option appears to be missing. Numbers & codes: Vin: A4C798Z405186. Decoded: A = AMC, 4 = 1974, C = automatic with floor shifter, 7 = Javelin series, 9 = 2 d ht, 8 = AMX, Z = 401 engine, 405186 = serial number. Door tag: Model: 479-8 = 1974 2 d ht AMX, Trim: 421 P = Black with black & white Domino cloth seats, Paint: A1 BK = Snow white whith black vinyl top. All numbers and codes match, and the car has its original 401 engine. The engine casting number is 3198951, which is correct for a 1974 401. The digits 401 are also casted into the block. The original owner's manual comes with the car. Only 4,980 AMX were built in 74, and with four available engines relatively few had the big 401 engine. And even fewer had the 401 with Go Pack. This is the last year for the real AMX. The attractive color combination, and the very low milage, makes this a rare and desireable car. As the AMX starts to catch up with other muscle cars in price, this original car should have great investment potential.

From WikipediaThe AMC Javelin is a pony car that was built by the American Motors Corporation between 1967 and 1974 in two generations, model years 1968-1970 (with a separate design in 1970) and 1971-1974. The sporty Javelins came only as two-door hardtop body style, and were available in economical versions or as high-performance muscle cars. The Javelins competed successfully in Trans-Am racing and won the series with AMC sponsorship in 1971, 1972, 1973 and independently in 1975. |
