Let me take you back to late February 1969 to appreciate this Very Special Z/28 and explain to you just how rare it is and why it was built. This Z/28 was originally ordered by Lyle Mader of Madison, S.D., late in February 1969. The long, harsh South Dakota winter must have given the 18-year-old Lyle quite a case of cabin fever as the high school senior he day dreamed of carving up the corners on the SCCA circuit with the likes of Mark Donohue and George Follmer. No ordinary Z/28 would do for Lyle. He wanted the closest thing he could get to the real SCCA Trans-Am car's he'd seen on TV. This meant opting for the crossram intake with two Holley double pumper carburetors, special factory headers and chambered exhaust . The car was also ordered with the JL8 4 wheel disc breaks ( see order forms ), and sent to a special Chevy warehouse where it sat for 2 or 3 weeks waiting for the parts for the 4 wheel disk brakes. Unfortunately it did not receive the rear disk breaks, they discontinued 4 wheel disc in May of 69 and this is a June car, so the car was delivered without them. Lyle also ordered the special Z/28 SCCA off-road cam with heavy-duty valve springs installed by the factory - usually found only on the real SCCA cars. Rounding out the high-performance special-order items, Lyle also checked the box for the M22 close-ratio gear box, the low-restriction chambered exhaust, 456 gears in a Posi-traction rear end, factory cowl-induction hood and Firestone 200 Sports car tires. Lyle wasn't finished with his dream car yet. Unlike the SCCA drivers, he was going to ride in comfort, so he ordered just about every convenience option available from GM he could, including the Z87 custom interior, black vinyl trim, tinted glass, fold-down rear seat, head-light washers, rear window defroster, remote control rearview mirror, center console with factory installed 8-track tape player, AM/FM radio, speed warning indicator, Comfortilt steering wheel and full cockpit instrumentation. To save weight, Lyle left out the electric windows, power steering and hide-away headlights. The baby blue paint was special-ordered ( the color was not normally available for the Z/28). The was also ordered with the white racing stripes wrapping all the way around the rear bumper - just like the Trans-Am cars he had seen on TV and is the only one ever produced from the factory with the strips running all the way down. A set of optional front bumper guards competed the exterior appearance. The Dealership, Glen Rapp Chevrolet must of had a in with Chevrolet to order such a special Z/28 Camaro. Glen Rapp still remembers this very special 1969 Z/28 Camaro. Glenn Rapp and the original owner are still alive today to verify this Very Special and Rare Z/28 Camaro. This 1969 Z/28 Crossram Camaro is in exceptional original condition for it's age. The car is unmolested and has always been garaged since new. The Original Rapp Chevrolet Hand Written Dealership Order Form took 2 Pages because of the number of options Lyle put on this car. The Original Window Sticker, Two Page Dealer Invoicing, Protect-O-Plate, Division of Taxation Paper Work, Including this Vehicle Registrations and Vehicle Safety Inspections Slips. There are also some Original 1970 Photographs from the previous owners. This Z/28 Camaro has all of it's Original Paper Work to verify this Z/28 Camaro in every way. This Rare Z/28 even has all it's original Weather Stripping. Although the car today is not a 100 Point Show Car, it is in exceptional original condition. Maybe it's the baby blue paint with SCCA striping, or the crossram, perhaps it's the group of full-boat luxury options on the window sticker. Whatever the case, this Z/28 is truly one of a kind. Other then July of 2004 when the car was purchased from Spencer, the last time this Rare and Special Order Baby Blue 1969 Z/28 Crossram Camaro was shown was In 1993. At that time Jerry MacNeish, author of "The Definitive 1969 Camaro Z/28 - SS396 Fact Book" and John Hopper, author of "The 1969 Camaro Reference Book from "A" to "Z"...", were writing there book's. Both authors came to Longmont, Colorado and visited with Spencer Wetheral and took lots of Pictures of this original, unmolested and special order car to use in their Reference Book's. This car was also featured in Super Chevy Magazine March 1993 and Muscle Car Magazine May, 1993.
