Mercedes-Benz and its partner AMG launched themselves on this attractive stage for production car sport with the CLK-GTR, which had been adapted to the changed conditions of the series after its debut the previous year. For the competition, consisting of well-known manufacturers, prepared for the hunt to catch the reigning champion Bernd Schneider and the championship crew from AMG-Mercedes. The CLK-LM - with a V8 instead of a V12 engine - was used from the third race of the seasons onwards; its first outing had been in the 24 Hours Le Mans, which does not count for the FIA GT championship. Two teams used the Mercedes GT vehicles in accordance with the more precisely defined regulations for the FIA GT series. In addition to the reliable development partner AMG, the company entrusted itself to the Persson team based in Ensheim near Saarbrücken, an old acquaintance in the Mercedes-Benz motorsport family. The mixture of experience and talent in the choice of drivers also proved its worth. The two racing cars used by AMG were driven by Bernd Schneider (St. Ingbert, Germany)/Mark Webber (Australia) as well as Klaus Ludwig (Roisdorf, Germany)/Ricardo Zonta (Brazil); Persson-Motorsport puts it money on Christophe Bouchut (France)/Bernd Mayländer (Schorndorf, Germany) as well as Jean-Marc Gounon (France)/Marcel Tiemann (Bad Soltau, Germany). In the ten championship races, AMG Mercedes captured eight pole positions and won all ten races. The CLK-GTR and CLK-LM led in 1119 laps of the 1259 race laps, and a Mercedes driver achieved the fastest lap on seven occasions. The Team ranking was won by AMG Mercedes with 146 points (ahead of Porsche with 49), and in the drivers' championship victory went to Klaus Ludwig/Ricardo Zonta with 77 points (ahead of Bernd Schneider/Mark Webber with 69). The Team Persson Mercedes came third in the overall rankings.

From WikipediaThe Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is a sports car and race car that was built by Mercedes-AMG, performance and motorsports arm of Mercedes-Benz. Intended for racing in the new FIA GT Championship series in 1997, the CLK GTR was designed primarily as a race car, with the road cars necessary in order to meet homologation standards being secondary in the car's design. Thus the limited production road-going cars were considered racing cars for the road. |
