About This 1960 Austin Healey 3000

Posted: 02 May 2003

Original, unrestored 3000 MK I. Garage kept since at least 1980, in running condition, and parked during the winter months. Not a councours car, but a good runner with an engine from a MK III, 25 extra HP but not the troublesome triple carb. Like any 40-plus year old car, it is a bit rough around the edges and needs some minor work, mostly cosmetic to continue as wondeful car. I've owned it 9 years, but my wife and I have twin toddlers, so I no longer can find enough time to enjoy this car, or keep up with the minor work it needs. I will miss it, but will attempt to salve my wounds with an old Beetle convertible (which has room for booster seats). It's a beauty, and gets loads of compliments, runs great and remains a blast to drive. One other note, which I forgot to mention, is that the interior is a bit rough. The driver's seat cushion is torn and the foam is 43 years old and crumbly. There's an old small tear in the passenger seat back, although it's cushion is in good shape. Also, the dash is a bit chewed up, with some puckering and a couple of small holes. The carpets are good, as is the steering wheel and back seat area. Again, it's not nuked, and about the same as when I bought the car nine years ago. One other note: I don't see this as a restoration car. You could buy a barn car and spend 30K to make it perfect. It would take nearly that to make this car perfect, too, and I'm not going to sell it at barn car rates. I can say that about 2K would make this car 90 percent, with minimal mechanical work and some cosmetic work. Or you can do I as did, take care of the small things as they come up and just enjoy driving the car.

As you can see from the pictures, this car has no serious rust issues, but could stand to be repainted (originally Healey blue, near as I can tell, but painted yellow and then green before I owned it). It needs minor brake work (there's a very slight leak of brake fluid I haven't tracked down). I have the proper oil cap coming en route from an eBay auction and will include it with the car, along with a custom car cover. It runs well and comes with a somewhat worn roof, but does need new side curtains. All of the gauges work, as do all the lights, the horn and the electric overdrive. First gear is chipped and has been since I bought the car in 1994, but has not worsened. This car is being sold as is, with no warranty of any kind.
