text: WITH VOLVO, THE HYBRID FUTURE IS ALREADY HERE Volvo Trucks took on the hybrid powertrain challenge as early as the 1980s and years of subsequent research, development and testing has led to the new cutting edge Volvo FE Hybrid. The solution: parallel hybrid technology using up to 30 per cent less fuel. One of the quintessential sounds of the city is the early-morning rumble of the diesel-powered refuse truck as it stop-starts up the street accompanied by the occasional tinkle of breaking glass from the rubbish in the compactor. Now, however, this backing track to urban life is about to change with the introduction of the hybrid engine. At low speeds the hybrid truck will replace the diesel’s growl with a muted electric hum. The Volvo FE Hybrid, which will be available for distribution trucks and city buses as well as refuse trucks, will be a significant stride forward for environmentally-friendly automotive technology. text: Cars that drive themselves can become reality within ten years A new EU project SARTRE is being launched to develop and test technology for vehicles that can drive themselves in long road trains on motorways. This technology has the potential to improve traffic flow and journey times, offer greater comfort to drivers, reduce accidents, and improve fuel consumption and hence lower CO2 emissions. Just imagine leaving home in the morning and, just after joining the motorway, meeting up with a number of other cars which inch up to each other, travelling at normal speed in a close-formation convoy. After a few minutes you can let go of the steering wheel and spend your time reading the morning paper, talking on the phone or watching the TV, while your car drives itself in complete safety and also saving fuel! With a brand-new acoustic laboratory, Volvo Cars' sound experts can make further progress in the area of engine noise. Volvo cars are to have a unique Scandinavian sound. The new acoustic laboratory is located in new premises in the very heart of the Volvo Cars production complex in Torslanda, Sweden. The chamber has a network of sound-absorbing protrusions embedded in the walls and ceiling to give optimal preconditions for testing engine noise. No background noise penetrates, no standing sound waves occur to disrupt the tests. On the other hand, the acoustic lab's hard floor is a very realistic representation of the surfaces on which cars operate. It recreates the same sound effects as when driving on tarmac. Keeping these growing mega-cities supplied in an ecologically sustainable way is one of the crucial problems facing urban and regional planners today. In the hunt for efficient alternatives to fossil fuels, Volvo Trucks’ latest green solution, biofuel DME, plays an important role. Forward-planning researchers are scarcely renowned for their unanimity on any issue, but on one point they are all in firm agreement: the world is moving towards the mega-city. Even today, there are more people living in large urban environments than in rural areas, and in another 25 years no less than 70 per cent of the world’s population will be living in mega-cities. There were an increasing number of cars on the roads which were getting ever faster, but there was no public debate on the issue of safety. The only car safety discussion in Swedish newspapers and trade publications related mostly to the dangerous habit of parking at night or on unlit streets and roads. In the world of aviation, safety belts had been used almost from the very outset, mainly because the pilots of the very first flying machines otherwise risked falling out of their open cockpits. There are actually some very early patents for belts designed for motor cars. Probably the oldest of these is American and was issued in 1885, coinciding with the debut of the automobile. A few years into the 1900s, a French patent was issued for a safety system encompassing both a lap belt and a diagonal belt that stretched across the chest. Have you ever felt drowsy while driving and almost dozed off behind the wheel? If so, you are not alone in answering 'yes' to that question. Drowsy drivers cause many accidents on roads the world over. Sometimes it may be difficult to ascertain if it is a tired driver who has caused an accident, so the true extent of the problem is largely hidden. What is clear, however, is that drowsy drivers are a large - and global - traffic-safety problem. According to the American NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), about 100,000 accidents are caused in the USA alone by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. This is the story behind these cylinders in brief. Even after only about 1,000 DA engines had been made, their supplier Penta Works had to re-tool for the production of a six-cylinder Volvo engine. The decision to make it was as old as the Volvo car itself, in fact even older, because even before the ÖV4 went into production it was clear that a six should be made available as soon as possible.
