I can't help but wonder whether Aston's new owners are getting nervous about their bottom line, hoping to get into the mass motoring market as a way to make mass profits. But Aston Martin is an exclusive prestige marque, which is at least part of the reason their customers buy Aston Martin cars. The Cygnet Concept is based on the Toyota iQ, which is a good little platform for any micro car, but the micro commuter market is extremely competitive and fast moving with new, innovative models every few years. text: ASTON MARTIN RACING WINS IN JAPAN Okayama, November 1 2009. Aston Martin Racing claimed a sensational victory in the second round of the Asian Le Mans Series in Okayama, Japan. The 007 Aston Martin LMP1 ran faultlessly throughout the three-hour race. Excellent performances from drivers Stefan Mücke (DE) and Harold Primat (CH) coupled with perfect pit work from the Aston Martin Racing crew saw the race go exactly to plan for the British team. In a repeat performance of race one, Mücke started in fourth place in dry sunny conditions, taking third just across the line. He set about hunting down the front runners with an impressive display of skill and speed, taking second and then first to lead the race by lap 15. Only 30 of these race cars for the street will be produced for the world. Following in the footsteps of the Ferrari Scuderia and Stradale and Lamborghini Superleggera, the Elite LMV/R is lighter than the factory Vantage due to most of the body panels being made from carbon fiber. The Scuderia, Stradale and Superleggera were built for the purists who wanted a race car for the street, a more nimble version of the production street car that they were built from. text: PODIUM FOR ASTON MARTIN RACING IN PORTUGAL Portugal, 2 August, 2009. The 007 Aston Martin LMP1 car of Jan Charouz (CZ), Tomas Enge (CZ) and Stefan Mücke (DE) finished second, securing a place on the podium at the Algarve 1000 kilometres in Portugal. The sister 009 car of Harold Primat (CH), Miguel Ramos (PT) and Darren Turner (GB) finished fifth. Mücke started the race at 19:15 in the 007 car from second on the grid and was soon in the lead. However, after just over an hour 007 was in the gravel following a spin. The car was undamaged and rejoined in fourth place. text: Aston Martin exceeds all expectations at Le Mans Fifty years on from Aston Martin’s victory in the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours, the team has exceeded all expectations by finishing an excellent fourth overall in this year’s race, having been quickest of the petrol runners from start to finish. As expected, the diesel-powered cars enjoyed a margin of superiority, but Aston Martin Racing fulfilled its mission of being the first petrol car home, having also been the quickest of the petrol cars during qualifying on Thursday night. text: ASTON MARTIN QUALIFIES FASTEST OF THE PETROL CARS AT LE MANS Le Mans, 11 June, 2009. Qualifying for the 77th Le Mans 24 Hours took place on Thursday evening during two sessions, from 7pm to 9pm and from 10pm to midnight. After a rain-affected free practice on Wednesday night, conditions for qualifying were dry, enabling the cars to run on slick tyres for the first time on the 13.4-kilometre circuit. Although start position is not so critical at the Le Mans 24 Hours, during which the cars are expected to cover more than 5000 kilometres in approximately 360 laps, all the teams are eager to benefit from the prestige of pole position. Aston Martin’s factory entered V12 Vantage – modified only slightly for competition – has swept to a stunning debut class victory in the 37th Nürburgring 24 hour race, forming part of a double Aston Martin victory in the SP8 and SP10 classes. Six Aston Martins will be amongst the 180 entrants in the Nürburgring 24 hour race – one of the toughest endurance tests in motorsport – spearheaded by a factory entered version of the British marque’s new V12 Vantage. The V12 Vantage, in near-standard specification, will be driven by Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez (DE), Chris Porritt (GB), Oliver Mathai (DE) and Richard Meaden (GB). 2009 Aston Martin to Run Three Cars at Le Mans 24 Hours
text: ASTON MARTIN TO RUN THREE CARS AT LE MANS 24 HOURS Gaydon, 21 May, 2009. Aston Martin Racing has recruited three new drivers to run a trio of Gulf-liveried LMP1 cars at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, which marks the 50th anniversary of Aston Martin’s first victory at La Sarthe in 1959. Joining the existing Aston Martin drivers, who are currently also competing in the Le Mans Series, will be Anthony Davidson (GB), Stuart Hall (GB) and Jos Verstappen (NL). The three LMP1 cars will be numbered 007, 008 and 009 and the exact configuration of the crews for the race, which takes place on June 13-14, will be announced at a later date. Davidson, 30, recently tested Aston Martin’s LMP1 car in Portugal, completing three one-hour stints. At its world debut this weekend, the Aston Martin One-77 has won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. Following the Geneva Auto Salon in March, where the technical illustration was first shown, the rolling chassis has since been completed by hand into the first car presented at Villa d’Este this weekend. At its first public unveiling in the perfect setting of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, the first complete One-77 was on show.
